Mercedes Schlapp, the White House communication strategist, is a difficult task. She's faced with a president who serves as his own director of communications as well as numerous legal fights which can disrupt the White House's strategy for messaging and a number of Cabinet secretaries caught up in their own disputes. But through it all Schlapp has stayed focused on the mission in hand and has worked closely with White House's political affairs and legislative affairs departments and policy shops, as well with the larger communications team for policy-related rollouts. To date, her focus is on issues like safety in schools and the opioid crisis, infrastructure, trade, and other related topics. She does not interact much with media outlets in her job. But she drew a burst of interest in March, when she was mentioned as a contender to replace Hope Hicks as communications director. Mercedes Schlapp does not have a simple job of White House strategic communication adviser. Her job is made difficult because she has to work with a White House president who serves as his director of communications. Additionally, there are numerous legal proceedings that could disrupt an administration's message strategy, as well as Cabinet secretaries who are embroiled in their personal controversies. Schlapp is able to remain in the right frame of mind and stay on top of her game by working closely alongside White House teams in political matters, legislative affairs and policy as well the larger communications team. In the beginning, she is focusing on safety at school issues, addiction infrastructure, trade and drug issues. The current position she holds doesn't require much contact with reporters. The company received lots of attention from the media when she was identified as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks, the communications director. The battle has been brutal. Schlapp's allies and Tony Sayegh started arguing with the media. Schlapp stated that, after the Washington Examiner had published an article that had negative reviews of Sayegh's persona, she phoned Sayegh in a private chat.
